Jihan Shavira - Women of the week

Updated: Oct 8, 2020

I am a 2nd year law student in Indonesia, and volunteer teacher of street law; which means I teach law to my community in an interactive way.

In Indonesia, there is a lack of education on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) for youth. Therefore, I chose to teach about this important topic when I taught senior high school students in 10th grade. I really enjoyed training the 10th grade youth and we learnt a lot from each other. Surprisingly, I learnt that the students did not think that catcalling was a form of SGBV. I am very happy that I was able to increase their awareness about the different types of SGBV in the hope that this education could help to prevent future instances of SGBV in this community.

The students’ feedback was great. Today, I have already completed two street law sessions, and I hope to do more and reach out to other locations or schools.

Participating in the street law program, really helped me to improve my public speaking skills and to be more confident in myself. The program has really helped me to believe in myself because now I feel I can positively contribute to society. I strongly encourage others to, when possible, work towards increasing awareness about SGBV to help eliminate all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination.

If you would like to be our Woman of the Week or would like to nominate someone, please get in touch. We hope to be able to showcase women from all over the world who are working to promote social justice and women's rights.
